The main focus of the Center for the Study of Addiction is to promote and enhance the life
experience of recovering persons, particularly those seeking a college education. In 1992, the
Center organized a Collegiate Recovery Community. This program includes several components:
- 12-Step Recovery Meetings - The Center for the Study of Addiction is committed to
following the 12-step philosophy outlined by Alcoholics Anonymous and adopted by many other
recovery groups. The Center and Texas Tech University provide building space for on-campus
recovery groups to meet. Currently, there are recovery groups meeting every day of the week.
- Scholarships for Recovering Persons - All scholarships are endowed by private donors who
wish to make an investment in the lives of recovering people. At this time, there are 30 students
receiving a scholarship from the Center for the Study of Addiction. The average G.P.A. of our
students ranges from 3.4 to 3.6.
- Seminar in Recovery - This unique seminar class is designed to help students address issues
that may be difficult in early recovery. Additionally, Seminar in Recovery encourages students to
form meaningful relationships with their peers who are also in recovery. This class meets once
per week and counts as course credit in the Human Development and Family Studies degree
plan.
- Academic Support - The academic success of recovering students is important at the Center
for the Study of Addiction. To ensure this success, the Center has implemented a peer facilitated
tutoring program in which students help other students who may be struggling academically.
Additionally, students have the option of attending study hall on a weekly basis.
It is also a goal of the Center to serve and help to the best of our ability, those students who may
be struggling in active drug/alcohol addiction or with an eating disorder. The Center for the
Study of Addiction works closely with the Raider Assistance Program and other local addiction
treatment centers to assure that any student wanting help can receive it.
