The Truth About MarijuanaThe survey taken at Edmond High Schools last year indicated that 37.4 percent of students have used marijuana. Is it just my paranoia or does that sound a little high to you (no pun intended)? Some people may say that the survey can be faked but that isn't likely as safeguards were put in place to catch those students who lie. The surveys that indicate conflicting answers are thrown out. I think parents need to keep in mind that the marijuana of today is ten to twenty times more potent than the marijuana of ten years ago. This drug is potent, dangerous and very addictive. Marijuana is by far the most widely abused illicit drug used by teens today. More teens are admitted to drug abuse treatment programs due to this substance than any other drug, including alcohol. It's time for not only the parents but for teachers, ministers, doctors and anyone who comes into contact with teens to pay attention and know the warning signs of marijuana use. Here is what to look for:
It is often presumed that the parents are aware of their child's use of alcohol and/or drugs but as I have often stated, the parents are usually the last to know. This means it is up to you to notify the parents of your concerns. Research indicates that the great majority of teens greatest fear is losing their parents respect. The sooner the parents are notified, the sooner they can take appropriate action. The latest data on marijuana use indicates that 19,000 Oklahoma youths between the ages of 12 and 17 use this drug on a regular basis. What many teens don't realize is that in addition to becoming addicted, marijuana can also cause memory loss, trigger panic attacks, depression and it affects cognitive thinking. Smoking marijuana is more dangerous than smoking cigarettes since marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more of some cancer-causing chemicals.
