Hopeful Horizons 2019
Porch Light Award Honoree
Mike Boss’s career in the field of drug and alcohol addiction is extensive, where he quickly became well known for his ability to effectively help families whose child might be struggling with addiction and mental health challenges. He developed an intuitive insight at not only reaching youth, but in also connecting to parents in crisis looking for help for their children.
Mike’s career as a drug addiction counselor began in 1984 at Drug Recovery, Inc. in Oklahoma City, where he worked with adults in a long-term community house setting. Since then, he has worked with both adults and adolescents in various settings. In 1991 Mike left the hospital setting and became a private counselor, primarily for adolescents and their families. He developed the first student assistant programs (SAP) in Oklahoma.
In 1995 after watching many adolescents fail at the traditional 45-day treatment center, Mike and two other therapists opened Hazel Street Recovery Center in Texarkana, Texas, a 25-bed long-term adolescent male facility. Then in 2001, Mike opened Four Winds Ranch, a 15-bed facility for adolescent females in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Mike founded the Oklahoma Outreach Foundation with a vision to provide support services to adolescents, not just for drug abuse prevention, but for those teens who had finished residential substance abuse treatment and were returning home.
This vision included providing financial scholarships to the working poor and to develop Oklahoma’s first Sober High School for adolescents transitioning out of treatment. This recovery high school would offer an option where students could continue their education in a safe, drug-free environment after transitioning out of treatment.
That vision ultimately became a reality with the Foundation providing extensive scholarships for both treatment and admission to the Oklahoma Outreach Recovery High School. Today, it is still in operation under the name of Teen Recovery Solutions.
Mike continues to provide his passion, expertise and knowledge to many in the recovery community.
