What is Parents Helping Parents?
Parents Helping Parents was initially established in 2001 by a group of Oklahoma City metro parents desperate for support during their children's substance use. Baffled by the behavior and actions of their young addicts they set out to find answers and help. Frustration followed them after discovering there were little resources available. These few parents began to educate themselves about the disease of addiction and felt a personal call to reach out and help other struggling families.
This small group began to work in conjunction with local juvenile court judges to spread the word about this new and growing resource of parent to parent support. Parents Helping Parents quickly began reaching out a hand of support to numerous families as partnerships with school systems and community organizations began to grow.
This small, intimate group of committed parents has since grown to include Oklahoma chapters in Tulsa, Edmond, Norman and Shawnee. Growth continues to be a priority as we recently expanded with a new chapter developing in Wichita, Kansas.
Parents Helping Parents seeks to offer hope through shared experiences, resources and education. Our support groups and meetings are open to parents with children, of any age, struggling with the disease of addiction and other substance use related issues. We are a 501c3 organization that offers all of our services and help to the community at no cost.
Shared Experience: Our groups of parent to parent support bring a unique dynamic to family based services by giving struggling families the opportunity to interact and develop relationships with parents who have walked the same difficult path.
Resources: Parents Helping Parents has created an extensive resource library. It includes treatment and community based resources as well as suggested readings.
Education: A key component to what Parents Helping Parents offers is education related to the disease concept of addiction, healthy family behavior and living, co-dependency and a variety of other topics. Many guest speakers and experts join us in meetings to provide presentations and education to our community.
